The girl nodded.
“When was the last time you ate?”
“I don’t remember… Veronica forgot again.”
Paloma looked at the clock—it was one in the afternoon.
There was no sign of food or the smell of breakfast.
Her heart sank.
“How can anyone forget to feed a child?” she thought.
“Come on, let’s find something yummy for you to eat, okay?”
Camila hesitated for a moment, but then reached out and took Paloma’s hand.
A Bond That Is Born
Three weeks passed.
From that first day, Paloma had become the only person capable of making Camila smile.
The little girl began to eat better, to sleep peacefully, to laugh again—and her laughter brought life back to the house.
But one rainy afternoon, while Paloma was folding clothes in the master bedroom, she discovered something that would change everything.
While organizing Mr. Augusto’s desk, she found an old phone hidden under some documents.
Next to it was a small bottle of unlabeled pills.
Intrigued and worried, she turned on the phone.
There were many deleted messages—but one was still there.
And what she read chilled her to the bone:
“She won’t remember anything. Keep giving her the pills every morning. When it’s all over, the inheritance will be ours.”
Signed: Veronica.
Paloma froze.
The pills.
The girl’s constant tiredness, the dizziness, the stomach aches.
It all made sense.
The Truth Comes Out
That night, Paloma waited for Augusto to return from his trip.
When he arrived, she called him urgently:
“Sir, please, you have to see this.”
She handed him the phone and the bottle.
Augusto frowned, confused, and began to read the messages.
As he read, his face went pale.
