A nervous patient sits in the dentist’s chair, gripping the armrests as the dentist prepares for a routine procedure. When the dentist reaches for a syringe, the patient panics and immediately refuses, insisting he can’t handle needles under any circumstances. His fear is so strong that even the sight of the equipment makes him tense up.
Trying another approach, the dentist offers nitrous oxide to calm him down. But the patient shakes his head even faster. Just thinking about wearing a mask, he says, makes him feel trapped and unable to breathe. It’s clear that neither of the usual options will work.
After a moment of thought, the dentist asks whether the patient would be willing to take a calming pill instead. This, surprisingly, is something the patient is completely fine with. He nods eagerly, relieved to hear an option that doesn’t involve needles or masks.
The dentist hands him a small tablet and tells him it will help him relax. The patient takes it without hesitation, grateful to finally have a solution. Only afterward does he ask whether the pill is meant to work as a pain reliever.
