Patel described the investigation as a sprawling international terrorism probe involving legal processes, device seizures, home searches, and numerous interviews. He vowed the FBI would scrutinize every person Lakanwal had contact with and emphasized that the agency intends to vet all individuals who entered the United States, legally or otherwise, to identify any potential criminal or terrorist ties.
The shooting also reignited political criticism of the Biden administration’s handling of immigration and refugee vetting. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem introduced new measures requiring countries of origin to cross-reference biometric data, expanding social media screening, and mandating annual check-ins. She also proposed an expanded travel ban targeting countries she claims are sending dangerous individuals.
