The small spirals of debris I kept finding on my desk and clothes turned out not to be dust or lint at all, but tiny pieces of my watch band slowly shaving away. The damage had been happening quietly over time, so gradually that the watch still looked normal unless I examined it closely. Only then did I notice the thinning edges, the soft fraying, and the delicate curls collecting like evidence I had ignored for far too long.
